The crux of the problem seems to be that gmail treats first.last@gmail.com and firstlast@gmail.com and all other 'variants' as the *same* email address,

and the PayPal representative,

you know, the one who is working in the fraud department as a security specialist,

when questioned on this says, indignantly:

"Why should I know how gmail works when am working for PayPal, I don't work for Gmail."
