Wife's condition has her autonomic nervous system mostly in sympathetic mode, i.e. fight, flight, or freeze, and I've found the best way to pull her out of it is not with words, but with hugs.
I wish I could give everyone I meet a big hug, that chest to chest (heart to heart) engagement is so disarming.
