Washington has become the first U.S. state to officially recognize the Islamic holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state holidays. Governor Bob Ferguson signed the legislation into law, adding both holidays to the state’s list of recognized—but unpaid—observances. Notably, Washington does not extend the same recognition to other major religious holidays such as Easter or Yom Kippur.
