I suppose I should make it clear that you can easily buy a fountain pen that sucks and needs work to write properly, and the danger zone is in the $50-150 range where the pens are fancy enough to be expensive to make, but sell for too little to get individual attention before they go out the door
I'd be pretty surprised to get a bad platinum preppy ($6) but I've had a couple $60-70 pens that were unusable from the factory because the nibs were ground wrong
