Also the magnetic field during a CME should increase in strength in the same way that Venus generates magnetic fields from interaction with solar wind. So there's a push back, which is itself more protective than the usual magnetic field.
Ionosphere should develop on its own no matter what the atmosphere is composed of.
The main issue is just ozone. Ozone protects us from UV in both directions of the chemical reaction - if O2 is struck by UV, it generates O3 while absorbing UV and re-emitting infrared ; if O3 is struck by UV, it becomes O2 while doing the same.
So the main issue is generating the ozone in the first place, and then there's some smaller maintenance generation that has to come from plants making oxygen and some percentage of that oxygen rising to a point where it gets hit with UV.
There are other possible solutions. Any of the aromatic compounds are exceptional at absorbing UV. I don't know which I'd use, but its an avenue for investigation, if necessary.
Point is, its doable.
