One of my earliest memories is of my older brother stimming, and getting made fun of for it... He stimmed in a very obvious way from a very young age, and then in high school he just decided one day that he was tired of being made fun of and... stopped. Cold turkey.
(I mean, he still stims of course, but his most common and obvious one he stopped and replaced it with more subtle ones.)
I think (my memory is TERRIBLE) that I saw this when I was very young and learned to hide it because I didn't want to be made fun of like he was.
So, from a very young age, my stims were very very subtle. I have had many points now that I realize I am autistic where I have let myself do full flappy hands, and things like that, and IT HELPS A LOT! But, I feel so self conscious when I do.. So, usually I stick to snapping my fingers in a distinctive pattern, or fidgeting with whatever toy happens to be near by (or ANYTHING nearby if there isn't a toy.)
I've really struggled to unlearn this.
