Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron have been tapped by Sotheby's to revamp its Breuer building, acquired from the Whitney Museum in 2022. The five-story building will undergo renovations over the next year and is expected to be completed by fall 2025. Sotheby's CEO Charles Stewart has announced that the company will preserve the building's interior lobby.
The Breuer building was originally designed by Marcel Breuer in 1966 and has gained recognition for its brutalist style. In December, preservationists filed a request with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission to grant official landmark status to the building's interior spaces. Sotheby's acquisition of the building comes at a time of flux for the auction house, which has $1.8 billion in debt and recently completed an investment deal with Abu Dhabi's sovereign-wealth fund.
