But I also wonder if the hierarchical perspective might sometimes mislead us. For example, psychoactive substances seem to "skip" from the molecular level to the subjective experiential level — our understanding of the intermediate levels is minimal. And people are aware of direct interventions at the molecular level even if they don't always see it that way.
