The way we have been trained to give compliments is problematic. People rightly distrust compliments as leverage to get something for themselves which leads to the suspicions you mention. Connecting your compliments to how someone satisfied your own needs makes it real. I have found this topic best addressed by Non-Violent Communication methods. Takes a lot of work to unlearn old patterns, though
