I'll try using KTX2 as a file format for imported textures since it promises to reduce GPU bandwidth, and it's also open source and maintained by Khronos. I hear surprisingly little about it, but it seems like a solid option?

Managed to integrate the library and loaded the lion's texture with it. Next up: automatically convert all textures to ktx and compare loading speeds.
