German physicist Heinrich Hertz died #OTD in 1894.
The discovery that electromagnetic radiation in the microwave and radio regions of the spectrum displays the same basic behavior as visible light—reflection, refraction, diffraction, interference, polarization—was made in Karlsruhe in 1888. He then conclusively proved the existence of the electromagnetic waves predicted by James Clerk Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism. The unit of frequency was named the "hertz" in his honor.
