Totally, I think Reddit is one of the most blatant examples of how community over moderation can breed an environment of independent echo chambers. What made Mastodon worse then even reddit I feel is that when one instance unfederated from another, no one from either could interact with the other anymore. It's like if reddit mods were given permission to control what you could and couldn't see on the site, banning you from communities that they weren't even a part of. Like, imagine you wanted to browse r/dankmemes but doing so banned you from accessing r/memes because the mods of dankmemes didn't like them. Why do the mods of one get to desice what you do and don't see? It made finding good instances hell becuae you had to constantly consider what you would and wouldn't have access to. And at that point, is it even solving any problems?
