18 October 1666
At noon with Lord Bruncker to St. Ellen’s … Here my Lord Bruncker proffered to carry me and my wife into a play at Court to-night, and to lend me his coach home, which tempted me much; but I shall not do it. … away by coach towards Lovett’s (in the way wondering at what a good pretty wench our Barker makes, being now put into good clothes, and fashionable, at my charge; but it becomes her, so that I do not now think much of it, and is an example of the power of good clothes and dress), where I stood godfather. But it was pretty, that, being a Protestant, a man stood by and was my Proxy to answer for me. A priest christened him, and the boy’s name is Samuel. The ceremonies many, and some foolish. The priest in a gentleman’s dress, more than my owne; but is a Capuchin, one of the Queene-mother’s priests. He did give my proxy … good advice to bring up the child. … It cost me near 40s. the whole christening: to midwife 20s., nurse 10s., mayde 2s. 6d., and the coach 5s. I was very well satisfied with what I have done, and so home and to the office.
St Helen's Bishopsgate

William Brouncker (2nd Viscount Brouncker)
One of the founders and the first President of the Royal Society.
being a Protestant
The christening was conducted by a Catholic priest, hence the need for a proxy.
Proxy at a Christening: The proxy system was used to fulfill religious or ceremonial obligations when someone did not directly participate due to religious differences.
good advice to bring up the child
This underscores the communal aspect of child-rearing in Pepys' time, where extended family and friends had significant roles.
Mr Lovett
An artisan, trompe l'oeil frame maker and varnisher (of paper) for Pepys.
The Capuchin Priest: The mention of the priest being a Capuchin, part of a Franciscan order known for their simple lifestyle, juxtaposed with his gentleman’s dress.
Henrietta-Maria Stuart (Queen Mother)
Miss Barker
A destitute young girl whose singing voice was admired by Pepys. She was dismissed in 1667 for insolence and lying.
Saint Francis of Assisi: He is the saint from whom the Franciscan Order takes its name.
Saint Francis Comforted by a Musician Angel, by Francisco Ribalta.
