Experienced this once but at 2am and it was a heard of elk in Idaho. Had one elk that separated from the herd and would pace me just off the shoulder. I'd speed up, he would run, I'd slow down, he'd drop to a walk. Went on for almost a mile until his shoulder ran out with a bridge. Was a very surreal experience
