The idea that basic utilities should be run by private companies for profit is daft. This is pretty easy to see when it comes to something as life-critical as water, but applies to other things as well. It's a great pity that the plans for a publicly owned energy company in Scotland have so far come to nothing. Just imagine if the massive profits creamed by shareholders would be invested back into the energy infrastructure; we could start making some real progress on our climate change commitments.
