I'm going through similar. My ex just died and having saved some feelings from years of disappointment til now because he had dementia and my adult daughter was slowed down in life due to chronic childhood illness, I had to hold things together. And now I'm tentatively surveying the landscape of what I hope will be the Great Reorganizing. I know what you mean about making it up. I feel disoriented because for 36 years there was a touchstone, for better and for worse, and it's gone.
