For several years I've been noting flowering and fruiting times of tree species across Ōtautahi-Christchurch city, including native kowhai trees and cabbage trees.
It's been eye-opening how many of these get cut down by residents. I keep having to add new trees to my survey when original trees I started surveying get felled.
I think this is why there are so few big trees across the city. With the turnover of property owners, a tree eventually finds itself owned by someone that doesn't like it.
