I think Apple had a similar setup for Lightning headphone adapters, but you'd probably need active electronics for the adapter to recognise the dongle and do whatever Lightning requires.

I've got no idea about CarPlay, but is it possible it's using OTG to have the phone act as a host and car act as device?
