npub1pfe56vzppw077dd04ycr8mx72dqdk0m95ccdfu2j9ak3n7m89nrsf9e2dm (npub1pfe…e2dm) The USB-C to 3.5 mm headphone dongles run in "audio adapter accessory mode". It works by signalling what it is over the CC pins, then the host repurposes some data pins to instead send analogue audio.
I think Apple had a similar setup for Lightning headphone adapters, but you'd probably need active electronics for the adapter to recognise the dongle and do whatever Lightning requires.
I've got no idea about CarPlay, but is it possible it's using OTG to have the phone act as a host and car act as device?
