Deflation leads to more debt because as prices decrease, the amount of money that people owe remains the same, while their incomes may not increase. This means that individuals are unable to pay back their loans with the same amount of money that they borrowed. Therefore, in deflationary periods, individuals may need to borrow more money, or work more hours, in order to pay back their debt.
