It's not quite fair to say they're not medically trained and some have decades of experience. But I know some settings have stopped using them because of problems with diagnosis errors. I wonder what the BMA think of it.
Labour have historically been quite keen this approach. PCSO, TA's, HCA's etc are all their to provide a less costly alternative. HCA's now do most real nursing in hospitals. Everything but meds.
Ultimately, it's funding vs safety.
