NYT and WaPo gift links have limitations. They are not truly free if: the subscriber sharing a) reaches their sharing limit, b) the link is not copied and shared from the gift sharing location in their logged in account. And a "free" account still must be created by readers, thereby sharing information with NYT and allowing them to track you across the internet.
