It existed long before Trump. I began college in the early 90's and from literally the first day, I had professors teaching economics or sociology 101 who would go on rants about what an evil mutherfucker Ronald Reagan was even though he'd been out of office for years.
Just quickly off the cuff... I think boomer professors (and others) conditioned late gen-x and millennials into this hyper political mindset, and they carried it into adulthood, and it gradually amped-up into 2008 when those people were comfortably into adulthood and saw an inspirational nigger as the dawn of a new era. The technology was also in place to assist them in pointing their rhetorical firehose at *everything*. Trump interrupted that imaginary utopia (in their minds) and they pushed back hard.
