"Mother Nature" and "Mother Earth" as images deployed to arouse respect and care for the biosphere don't seem strong enough. Adults don't usually depend on their parents for survival the way we all do on Earth's biosphere. Further, respect for elders isn't a strong feature of developed capitalist societies and many may feel comfortable ignoring and even exploiting this metaphorical ancestor.
