There nearly always are and though I've heard plenty of people say it's not intentional, but I use #Linux which has pretty much the same #networking system and I never has an issue.
In fact I don't even need the software. #Mullvad give very clear instructions how to DIY with Network manager, so I'm going to say #Apple just don't like VPNs.
