I agree completely. I think the mindset that OpenBSD users and appreciators have adopted is to just to be content with what software is available in packages and ports. It has changed what software I commonly use and has made me more minimal and more inclined to using terminal user interfaces (TUIs). We also have adopted a more "do it yourself" attitude and often compile github projects ourselves on the system and looking for workarounds to getting the software we want working. It's definitely a "hackers" system in the classical definition.
