I trained myself for a couple years. Practiced several times a week very diligently. Here’s what I learned.

It’s cheaper for neurons to fire than to stay silent, calorically. So when you stay very still for a long time, they get tired and start to fire randomly. You can get this more easily in a sensory deprivation tank.

I would have many scary, strange experiences. As I relaxed, which was hard and took a long time to find all the random bits of tension, my heart would sometimes surge and I would get really excited. My body would vibrate. Then if I could manage to stay relaxed, the real fun would start. I might feel like I was floating or that I was a few feet away or that I was the size of the room. Sometimes I would hear voices in other languages.

Tense and release was the best way to relax. Practice in the morning after a good sleep. Wake up, wash your face, start relaxing the body.

I should write all this up somewhere.
