Random lunchtime thought...
Folks here are hopefully aware of the gray goo theory where you build a robot whose purpose is to replicate smaller versions of itself.
It occurred to me that modifying that theory slightly would dramatically change the result.
What if you placed a replication limit on the initial program to say, 5,000 iterations so the final generation could be contained within a jar or some other small container.
And what if you extended the program so that they just sit there until given a signal which would trigger replication of versions of themselves that are twice as big, and do so for10,000 generations.
You would end up with a giant robot army that fits in your pocket!
Maybe a Sci-Fi buff can tell us what book has been written exploring such a concept.
