For a lot of projects that I use that I'm not skilled in, I donate/subscribe/etc. to pay them to do the good work. Where I *am* skilled, I try to help out meaningfully with code, bug reports, packaging work, etc.
You can always do a mix of both, too. It's up to you to figure out what you want to do there.
