"Forest," Bokuyō Katayama, 1928.
Katayama (1900-1937) was a champion of Japan's nihonga school of art, which focused on traditional subjects, formats, and materials, but often with some influence from Western art.
This painting also brought him acclaim, as it greatly impressed the judges of the Imperial Juried Exhibition and opened doors for him to display his art elsewhere. However, ill health took him just as he was climbing the ladder of success.
Such a moody and atmospheric scene! And yet cool as well...
From the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
