Wave was the underlying technology Google developed to build Google +. This was back when they wanted to open source stuff so Wave was gonna be a distributed federated open source something or other. But the business model never developed for them and eventually they shut down wave as a project. But I suspect a lot of the technology is still used in a variety of Google projects.
