Grifters come in all shapes and sizes. This is a story about one of the worst I have met...
About 15 years ago I was engaged to do some work for a person called John living on their own.
John seemed a nice enough guy, he was always at home and always very busy on the computer and phone. John rang me one day to tell me that he was thinking of turning his home, which was a very modest rural estate into an animal rescue retreat. He also mentioned that he was suffering from multiple sclerosis and has engaged local youth to help redevelop the estate to care for many different types of animals. For a time it looked like it was very good. There were at least six to 10 volunteers each day working there. There were always free range animals roaming around
He always called me when he had an idea about a new building or development going up and whether we would be willing to provide commercial services for this. As far as pricing goes we never did John any favours, As there was always something extra to be done at the end before payment was remitted.
A little while after this he called me to say he had removed all the animals from the farm and is going into a different direction with the property. He was now providing halfway house services for people not long removed from the prison system. I made him aware that there were some services that we provided that are no longer legal if he is replacing the animals with people. He just seemed to simply ignored the legalities/morality of it.
By this time he had used the volunteers to build a series of self-contained cabanas, which the ex inmates were to be housed in and reintegrated back into society. Swimming pools and saunas were also provided. A couple of garages for vehicles. To my knowledge no ex inmates were ever residenced at this property. However I did see listings on AirBNB.
I lost contact with John, sometime in around 2016. I told him I will no longer be providing services for him, which is the first time I've ever told somebody this who pays all their invoices. He was very painful to deal with by this stage. He even accused me of being too capitalistic towards a registered charity. He would cite examples of other contractors, plumbers, electricians that had provided free or discounted services for each build. I've seen him on more than one occasion start to cry and become very emotional almost instantaneously. Then once the person folds to whatever he is demanding, he instantly snaps into full of praise for that person.
I was able to look up the real estate history and discovered that the whole property in its entirety with detached buildings garages and land plot, sold for many millions. A majority portion of it was built under the guise of charity and volunteers, these people were scammed.
I also do not believe he had Multiple Sclerosis!
