There was a dog, some years ago (I've published some photos of him) that walked for chilometers from his house just to reach us here. Then he decided it was time for a walk, and followed us for the 6 kms daily walk. Once we decided to doubled it - the dog decided to follow us for the whole 12 kms, having fun, running, etc. At a certain point, some minutes before sunset, he raised his head, looked at the sun setting, then started running back home.
It happened for more than one year, almost weekly. We haven't seen this dog for a long time, but was already quite old.
