There are doors and gates to keep them out of the bedrooms and home office, and a wire x-pen to keep them away from the media cords, and tubing on the few other cords they can reach. But they’d never gone upstairs before this week!
See, back in early February all my rats died from a rat plague the two new ones brought in. I was heartbroken and swore off rats because there’s nowhere else around here to buy rats than that one horrid pet store that I got the sick ones from.
But the kid and I missed having tiny buddies upstairs! It’s a big loft space, and I sew and he does homeschooling up there. So I switched to guinea pigs.
Ben! They’re just as magically adorable as rabbits! They’re like the tiny little charisma-bros of capybaras! They eat the same fresh greens and hay as rabbits, and they whistle when they’re excited. Mine have learned that a lot of the time, when I come upstairs and say “hey girlies,” I’m about to offer them a handful of grass or something, and they’ve started whistling as loudly as possible when they hear me on the stairs.
So this week, Sebastian the rabbit put on his detective hat. What is that noise from upstairs? Why is my food human taking handfuls of grass up there all the time? (N.b. he gets fresh sprouted wheatgrass!) He decided to come looking, and he refused to take no for an answer.
The baby gate I got for the bottom of the stairs has rabbit-sized gaps on the sides. The same wire x-pen that corrals him at night and keeps him away from the tv cords is actually no match for him - yesterday I was quietly sitting and watching, and I saw him silently lift a corner of the wire and slide under it!!
So, as one does, I was like, sure, you can hang out up here. And then today I went to the dump and then repotted seedlings instead of rabbit proofing the upstairs, and now I’m out a power converter 😂
