Profits are prioritized because they are businesses, not charities (the commercial distros do contribute tons to #foss projects and the kernel directly). Nothing wrong with that as people need to be compensated for their time. Since the software is largely free as in beer, the profits are generated from selling support and training.
Oh they are definitely interested in the advancement of #linux just not in the way you (may) prefer.
Having previously used the enterprise-grade Linux desktops, I can honestly say they aren't much to write home about. Packages are well tested but several versions behind and a much slimmer selection, for obvious reasons.
#RHEL on the desktop is a rather painful experience. #SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (and Novell Linux Desktop which preceded it) fared better. And of course, no security updates unless you have a paid support contract.
