I will agree that charity leaves people out, much like government imposed means testing does.

Unlike charity, mutual aid works not from a benevolent mindset where one gives to someone less fortunate, but an exchange between equals for the betterment of all.

I started and ran a mutual aid project in my little town in North Carolina for about 4 years before handing it off to others (who unfortunately run it like a charity). Nobody was ever asked for proof of need, nobody was ever asked if they were worthy, or whether or not they needed the clothing we were giving. Everyone was able to get what they needed or wanted, no questions asked. It worked beautifully and nobody was left out.
