The Lepreau refurbishment that was supposed to cost $1.5B and last 18 months ended up costing $2.5B and lasting almost 4 years. When adjusted for inflation, the refurbishment cost not much less than the initial construction.
There is no academic or practical experience to indicate that SMRs will be cheaper per MW than traditional units. And at least one paper in the PNAS showing 2 to 30 times as much waste.
