I'm a new home owner but far as I know you don't shop for insurance yourself until you own the home outright. Maybe depends on state?
The bank shops for insurance and include it in your home loan. The loan payment includes an estimate of the property tax/insurance added to it.
It's a condition of the loan that the home has to be insured. Not sure how they would cancel the insurance on all the homes in fire areas when probably 80% or more are on a mortgage and are insured through the bank.
