One of the major things holding open source back in terms of User Experience is its reluctance to take budgeted tech debt voluntarily.

Tech debt is a tool. When budgeted properly, it helps deliver software that is more pleasant to use and attracts more funding. With it, the project can repay its debt and improve.

All new features come with tech debt. Repaying it too early is akin to vacuuming after each step. It’s a waste of effort for little difference.
