I moved into my parents' place for a stint (loooong stint) right after college graduation (no one wanted to hire a young White man without 20+ yrs of experience and who wouldn't take the mandated jab besides). I brought with me my small, solid collection of spices.
One day I went to make dinner for everyone and couldn't find some spices. Any bottles (mine) that were still there had sharpie on them, just as my mom's suddenly now had.
Dates. Expiration dates.
I can give a pass for giving birth to me, but throwing away my spices for being "out of date" was cruel.
Those spices will outlast my bones.
