by the way, something I thought at the end: Something everyone can do immediately, check how much client traffic hits your http port on the API and start identifying who it is and why they hit it.
This way you can slowly fix it without necessarily breaking anything. You should get quite valuable insights there like User Agent, source IP and API endpoint they are talking to.
And you can just use something like goaccess and point it at your currently log files.
