"Latchkey kids" was a term I didn't understand when I heard it on the news as a kid in the 1980s. It's one of those terms like "Gen X" which apparently applied to me, but I didn't realize at the time.
My parents were still married, but often both working or out of the house. So it was routine for us to let ourselves in and be at home for awhile for a good chunk of grade school.
Snippets of news reports I would hear at the time made latchkey kids sound like some poor unfortunates.
