Should I bring on a cofounder or hire a sales rep?

I’m currently pre-launch with an MVP planned for release in January. The product is something I’ve built entirely myself—I’m an engineer with a decent amount of sales experience. Market validation and pricing research have been done (I hired that part out), and I’m feeling confident in what I’ve got so far. The Situation: I’m expecting my first child in March, and as you might guess, time is about to become incredibly scarce. Right now, I’m juggling development, product management, early customer outreach, and all the administrative odds and ends that come with a bootstrapped startup. I know that once the baby arrives, continuing to build the platform and simultaneously handling sales and customer support might become unmanageable. The Dilemma: I’m considering bringing on a cofounder. But my main reason to do so is time scarcity due to a life event—which I’m unsure is the “right” reason. I know choosing a cofounder is a huge decision. You’re essentially picking a partner who will hold significant equity and influence. This person would ideally help handle sales, operations, and maybe even some of the strategic load. The risk is: what if I bring in the wrong person or give up too much equity too soon? Alternative: Instead of looking for a cofounder, maybe I hire a salesperson on a low base/high-commission model. That would let me stay solo-founder, keep equity intact, and handle management with a simpler relationship. But I’m completely self-funded, so it’s still a bit tricky. I could consider taking VC money to ease the financial burden, but I’m not thrilled about having a board to answer to at this early stage. Looking for Advice: So, is it a “bad” or short-sighted reason to look for a cofounder simply because my personal circumstances (new baby) are limiting my time? Is it better to just pay for the help I need, even if it’s sales or operations, rather than bringing on someone as a partner? If you’ve been through something similar, I’d love to hear your experience. How did you navigate time constraints and the cofounder decision?
