I've been a #vegetarian for over 26 years now. And boy, have I gotten a bunch of stupid responses.
Always unasked for. I'll never "preach". All I ever do is politely mention my options: Sorry, but I cannot eat that/there.
The most common response is one that asks me to defend my choice: not just explain it, but defend.
But a while ago I heard the stupidest of them all:
"There was a study that shows some plants have feelings too. So..."
