Just found out that on macOS, desktop icons for images have hit boxes that are only the preview, not the surrounding alignment box. I had some very wide short screenshots, and selecting them required hitting the exact pixels, not the space in between the icon and the text label, which registered as a desktop click.
I don't think anyone ever has intended to click the desktop by sneaking the mouse cursor in between the icon and its label, but here we are. Peak UX.
