What are your thoughts on discourse.org? I want to use it to create an alternative to a Facebook group but I'm a little wary of open source that is nonetheless centrally maintained and VC-funded...
Also, if you have an alternative you prefer, please tell me about it! Needs to be phone-friendly and 100% private; Mastodon seems like not an ideal choice for the latter reason.
