Really interesting article. The author thoroughly debunks the overarching myth of King Leopoldo’s Ghost and goes into great detail on a number of specific deceptions, but he is unable or unwilling to try and understand why Hochschild would lie so boldly, though he openly ponders the question a number of times. The answer is of course that Hochschild is jewish and despises Europeans, and that he thought (correctly) that he could get away with lying like this. The author even chastises Hochschild for violating the sacred memory of the Holocaust by making so many Nazi comparisons in the book. This is the only point with which I disagree with the author of the article: Leopold’s Congo and the Holocaust are, in fact, profoundly comparable.
