I have no doubt Signal is private and secure, but their approach to open source leaves much to be desired.
The source code for their app is open, but it includes a dependency on Google Play Services, even if you install it from their website, and they are against it being published to F-Droid (who would also remove this dependency). The only other option is a fork with no guarantee of updates. Dependency aside, updates are important and you shouldn't use a fork for such an important app.
