Seems like most likely he had some of his bitcoin private keys backed up with pgp somewhere (bad practice). His computers got hacked and his pgp key was stolen. I’m guessing his encrypted bitcoin pgp backups got decrypted and stolen afterwards. No idea if this is the case but just a guess.
