i agree. large scale mining farms using grid mix or retrofitting fossil generation plants and purchasing carbon credits to claim net zero will be a passing fad. the economics are not sustainable. we are seeing the beginning of this with miners who over leveraged on credit going belly up.
if you look at birdapp:@dsbatten 's work ( https://batcoinz.com/a-more-complete-picture-of-bitcoins-energy-usage/ ) you will find that behind the meter and off grid energy use is overwhelmingly targeting wasted, stranded, often renewable energy sources. that is, they are finding the cheapest power - that is the energy revolution speak of. never before have we had an economic incentive to seek out these energy sources that makes sense. a buyer of last resort that can turn on and off instantaneously to stabilise grids and a buyer of first resort that will ultimately be priced out to incentivise renewable buildout.
until we build out base load energy generation that does not require fossil fuel consumption  (nuclear), waste will be a part of that. i would prefer natural gas over other options. bitcoin mining can and does pick up that otherwise flared waste to make a use for that which reduces flaring, which reduces methane leakage.

if you're willing to continue to discuss, i am as well. i'll admit i am continuously learning and i am sure there are more qualified on the matter than i (i linked you some)
