32 should normally be adequate but 4 is small. A compressed kernel is like 2.5 and a base squashfs is another 2.5.

I don't see 256 ever being inadequate, the kernel 20 years ago was 1.5, now it's 2.5. It grows but not like hardware.

This platform is dual image from the factory, and I want to use it as dual-boot, so each image has 20MB of space. Even 20MB seems like it will be fine for the duration. The kernel has to fit inside of 7.5MB because of bootloader stupidity, but again, I don't see a minimal compressed kernel ever going beyond that. OpenWRT puts everything it can in modules, so the kernel image is only what really needs to be in the kernel (plus the flash driver to be able to load the FS & modules)...
